Hong Kong born Ximon Lee’s H&M Collection

The 24-year-old Hong Kong born, New York based Parsons graduate Ximon Lee was crowned the winner of the H&M Design Award earlier this year. This would mark him as the first menswear designer and the first American designer to have received the award. Despite being a menswear designer, Ximon’s clothes are not just for the boyfriend with avant-garde taste.
Lee’s oversized and larger-than-life 8-piece capsule collection celebrates unisex attire, and can be integrated just as easily into his or her wardrobe (albeit taking up massive amounts of closet space). His boxy silhouettes are surely a standout amongst all the drapery and fluidity of chiffons and wools we have seen this season.

“I am thrilled with Ximon’s collection for H&M. His bonded fabrics and structured shapes are really exciting, and show exactly why Ximon won the H&M Design Award,” says Ann-Sofie Johansson, Creative Advisor at H&M.

It’s not everyday a fashion sketch translates directly to the body, but in this case it is paper to fabric. The enlarged and clean-cut silhouettes are structured so the body forms to the clothing, rather than the other way around. Lee constructs his clothes with a piece of foam between the fabrics to achieve his gravity-defying shapes, so the structure remains the same on or off the body.

There is something so comfortable when looking at the clothing; the oversized and chunky nature of the collection evokes a feeling of protection and safety and will get us geared up for the winter season. The collection will hit the shelves of selected H&M stores and hm.com from 22nd October 2015. See the pieces below: Text : Kieran Ho
