Michelle Chang: A Healing Journey Rooted in Compassion
From running a modest solo clinic to building a well-established Chinese medicine enterprise, registered Chinese medicine practitioner and founder of Chinese Essence Medicine Group, Professor Michelle Chang has navigated over two decades of challenges while witnessing the evolution of the industry.
Through resilience and a forward-thinking philosophy that seamlessly integrates the wisdom of traditional Chinese medicine with the precision of Western diagnostics, she has built a standout practice in a highly competitive field while earning the deep trust of her patients. For Michelle, the most meaningful part of her work lies in the human connections she forms. Being able to heal patients and accompany them through different stages of life remains her greatest reward.
Guided by Faith
A devoted Buddhist, Michelle describes her entry into Chinese medicine as a matter of fate. At the age of 24, while searching for her career path, she met a Buddhist practitioner who recognized her natural affinity for the field and encouraged her to pursue it. "At the time, the government was actively promoting Hong Kong as a hub for Chinese medicine," she recalls. She enrolled in the University of Hong Kong's School of Professional and Continuing Education, completing her Bachelor's, Master's, and eventually a Doctorate in Chinese medicine. With timely opportunity and the guidance of a mentor, her path into the profession felt almost destined.
Heritage and Humble Beginnings
Michelle comes from a family with deep roots in Chinese medicine spanning several generations: her great-grandfather was trained under an imperial physician during the late Qing dynasty. This rich heritage inspired her to carry forward the spirit of healing. In 2000, she founded Chinese Essence Medical. In the early days, she faced what she calls the "three lacks": lack of funding, network, and experience. Undeterred, she began by treating friends and family from a small space where she lived and worked, gradually building her reputation. As patient numbers grew, she expanded into a larger clinic and began assembling her own medical team.
Bridging Chinese and Western Medicine
Traditional Chinese diagnosis relies heavily on observation and experience, without the clear numerical indicators used in Western medicine. To bridge this gap, Michelle adopts an integrative approach by using Chinese medicine as her foundation, complemented by Western clinical indicators. "This allows us to standardize and make treatments more transparent, helping patients better understand their conditions and recovery process." She also invests heavily in continuous training for her team, including sessions with Western medical practitioners, to ensure a well-rounded, holistic standard of care.
Comprehensive Care
Under Michelle's leadership, the group has broadened its services to offer more comprehensive care, now covering general practice, dermatology, gynaecology, paediatrics, orthopaedics, and pain management. The clinics also provide specialized health management programs for high cholesterol and weight control, as well as scalp treatments for conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and hair loss related to cancer therapy. The group has developed its own line of proprietary Chinese medicines and wellness products.
Since 2018, she has invested over HK$30 million in developing AI-driven systems for Chinese medicine. Collaborating with the University of Hong Kong, City University of Hong Kong, and the Hong Kong Productivity Council, her team is harnessing AI and big data to enhance diagnosis, prescription tracking, and to ensure the safety and traceability of herbal sources, helping to modernize and elevate the entire industry.

The Pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 presented one of the greatest tests. At its peak, with over 50,000 daily cases, the team faced overwhelming demand. "We had to respond to an overwhelming number of patients in a very short time," Michelle recalls. "It was a real stress test: ensuring sufficient herbal supply, maintaining treatment quality, and delivering clear clinical guidance." Despite the pressure, her team remained committed. Staff returned to work as soon as they recovered, and the pharmacy operated around the clock, preparing thousands of herbal prescriptions daily. Michelle also publicly shared treatment formulas and donated herbal medicine to charities in support of the wider community.
Giving Back
Driven by compassion, Michelle established the Chinese Essence Charity Foundation in 2014 to support underprivileged communities. The foundation has funded schools in rural areas and carried out targeted poverty alleviation projects. The group also partners with various NGOs, including breast cancer foundations and food rescue organizations, through donations and volunteer work. Michelle herself remains actively involved in community service with Yan Oi Tong.
A Philosophy of Trust
As both a practitioner and business leader, Michelle's management style is guided by trust and empowerment. "My philosophy is simple: don't overmanage. Give your team the space to grow, along with the patience and tolerance for trial and error." Her approach is deeply rooted in her Buddhist practice. Through meditation and studying the Diamond Sutra, she has learned the importance of letting go of attachment and ego. "When facing pressure, it's important to step back from emotions and respond with clarity and wisdom," she says. "Much of what we cling to is ego. Letting go brings freedom."
To Michelle, letting go does not mean giving up, but rather to detach from outcomes: "True balance comes from being both driven and able to let go." She particularly encourages women to prioritise their own well-being: "Women often juggle multiple roles – career, family, motherhood – and tend to neglect themselves. It's important to put yourself first and affirm your own worth."
"You must strive when you are young, but after giving your best, do not become attached. That is true freedom."
