Asia Society Hong Kong: "Hung Hsien: Between Worlds"
The Chinese Women Artist Series, initiated by Asia Society Hong Kong Center, has been a truly groundbreaking initiative, bringing long-overdue attention to the extraordinary contributions of female artists in Chinese art history. Among the distinguished artists featured in this series, Hung Hsien emerges as a particularly compelling figure. Her exhibition, "Hung Hsien: Between Worlds," is currently on view until June 21, 2026.
Since its launch, the series has served as a unique tribute to the diverse talents and profound impact of female artists in Chinese art history. From the bold ink innovations of Fang Zhaoling in 2017, followed by the vibrant Parisian works of Pan Yu-lin, the visionary abstractions of Irene Chou, the groundbreaking integrated art of Lalan, the modernist expressions of Hoo Mojong, and the powerful speculative narratives of Bingyi, each exhibitions seeks to highlight the rich and often overlooked contributions of women artists.
Each artist brings a distinct voice and perspective to the forefront, highlighting the depth, resilience, and creativity these artists brought to 20th-century Chinese art. What unites them all is a shared spirit of innovation and strength, weaving a narrative of women who refused to be confined by tradition or expectation. These are the stories of female artists who fearlessly crossed cultural and artistic boundaries.
Hung Hsien's own journey is a story of resilience and reinvention. Born in Yangzhou, China, in 1933, she later moved between Taiwan and the United States, where she immersed herself in Abstract Exprssionism and Surrealism. In a male-dominated art world, she developed a distinctive ink painting language that blended Eastern tradition with Western influences, pushing traditional Chinese ink painting into previously unknown territory through bold color blocks, lyrical brushstrokes, and abstract forms.

At the heart of "Between Worlds" lies Hung Hsien's ability to merge the technical precision and philosophical depth of classical Chinese ink painting with the emotional freedom and expressive energy of Western abstraction. The result is a body of work that feels both timeless, yet contemporary.
Despite her significant role in shaping modern ink painting, Hung Hsien's contributions have too often been overlooked in mainstream art narratives. Through this exhibition, Asia Society Hong Kong Center seeks to shed light on her pivotal role in modern ink painting, offering her the thoughtful recognition she has long deserved.

Through "Between Worlds," Hung Hsien's work invites audiences to embark on a visual journey that transcends borders, serving as a powerful reminder of the enduring legacy of Chinese women artists and the power of art that dares to cross boundaries.
